About Us
The Warren County Summer Music School (WCSMS) has been fortunate since its inception in 1989 through a bequest from the Harry A. Logan Jr. Foundation and Kay H. Logan, to initiate a broad based summer arts program. The music school was established to encourage and develop the study, performance and appreciation of the fine arts. The WCSMS is a three-week immersion in the techniques and joys of musical performance and performing arts that provides new horizons for students in northwestern Pennsylvania.
The school takes place in early June following the close of the normal school year. It is held at the Warren Area Elementary Center in Warren, PA and instructs students entering fifth grade through high school as well as adults in introductory and advanced courses in instrumental and vocal music, dance, theater, music theory and visual arts.
The faculty consists of experienced certified arts educators whose qualification include university degrees, educational certification, or life experiences in the arts. They in turn mentor approximately 22 interns who are either high school students interested in a career in the arts or university students with either a major or minor in the arts. The school reinforces the arts in life connection through student performances and community outreach for such diverse groups as senior centers, nursing homes, day care centers and Bollinger Enterprises for developmentally challenged clients. The performances by students provide interaction with the community that highlights the importance of the arts in everyday life.
The WCSMS in collaboration with Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, the Logan Wintergarden Series, Jamestown Community College and the Art Smart program through the Warren County School District, Warren, PA has sponsored workshops and concerts for elementary and college students. The artists have in the past been such notable performers as the Tuvan throat singers, Huun Huur Tu, Alpin Hong, pianist, and the jazz quartet, Bassoon in the Wild, and the Imani Winds.
